Turboant M10 Lite
Category: Ultra-Light (20-30 lbs)
Type: Budget

Specs:

Weight & Dimensions:

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

As the title of this guide conveys, we’re focusing our attention on lightweight electric scooters that will ensure that you float like a butterfly – but also carry enough sting to buzz like a bee. The Turboant M10 Lite is a great place to start.

Weighing just 30.9 lbs, but carrying enough power to thrill commuters and casual riders alike, it’s a reliable everyday model.

It scores top marks in almost every department, subverting the long-held belief that budget scooters must make compromises on quality. Truth is, no other scooter in the sub-$400 class can lay claim to such all-around excellence as the Turboant M10 Lite.

Josh Carrying the Turboant M10 Lite

Why I Recommend It:

Despite being light enough to carry around without so much as a twitch in your shoulder, the M10 Lite is as tough as an anvil. There’s minimal exposed wiring, while the IP54-rated aluminum frame and wobble-free stem withstand the stresses of everyday use.

Turboant M10 Lite Chassis

The handlebars, meanwhile, are wider than your average budget scooter at 19.7 inches, affording you greater control and balance when going at speed. This control is enhanced further by the rubber handgrips, while the ergonomic thumb throttle is far more satisfying than the finger throttle found on its predecessor, the M10.

Turboant M10 Lite Cockpit

In the center, you’ll find the anti-glare display. It ticks all the boxes showing your key riding stats, while beneath it there’s a USB charging port. This is super handy for when you want to charge your phone on the go.

I mentioned the Lite’s sting at the start of this review, and this is all down to its 36V 350W motor. With the throttle pushed to its limit, you can expect to hit a top speed of 16 mph. This establishes the M10 Lite as the fastest scooter under $400, while its acceleration rate of 0-15 mph in 7.8 seconds is only marginally slower than the more expensive M10 (7.6 seconds).

Turboant M10 Lite Durable Chassis

Its maximum range of 15.5 miles (or 10 miles under realistic conditions) is equally as impressive, given its low price tag. This should be more than enough juice for a commute or two, and once empty, the 6.6Ah battery can be recharged in just 4-5 hours.

Josh Riding the Turboant M10 Lite

Now, the chances are that, since you’re seeking a lightweight scooter, portability is important to you. Here, the M10 Lite shines. Its folding mechanism is exceptionally quick and easy to operate, and once folded, the scooter measures just 44.5 (L) × 19.7 (W) × 20.5 (H) inches. This is small enough to fit snugly in a car trunk. You’ll even get it on a bus without so much as an irritated glare from other passengers.

Turboant M10 Lite Folded Frame

Being a budget scooter, you won’t be surprised to learn that the M10 Lite doesn't come with suspension. Fear not, however, because its 8.5-inch pneumatic tires are a headline feature. Not only do they absorb shocks and vibrations from the road with aplomb, but, due to their profile, they’re also great for maneuverability.

Turboant M10 Lite Front Wheel

The streets can be fraught with hazards, of course, so you’ll need a strong pair of brakes to stop safely. Thankfully, the M10 Lite knocks it out of the park; its rear disc and electronic braking system will bring you to a complete stop from 15 mph in 2.9 meters, far outstripping the 5.0-meter average that’ll you encounter with most other scooters in its price class.

Turboant M10 Lite Disc Brake

There are a couple of minor missteps, though: the deck is a little on the short side; the taillights don't match the bright headlight in the visibility stakes; and cruise control has a habit of kicking in when you don't request its presence.

Turboant M10 Lite Lights

But these are all easily surmountable when you remember this trailblazer’s affordable price tag.

AnyHill UM-1
Category: Ultra-Light (20-30 lbs)
Type: Mid-Range

Specs:

Weight & Dimensions:

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

AnyHill is known far and wide for its budget-friendly commuter scooters that meld lightweight practicality with high-quality features. Being the brand’s flagship model, you’d expect the UM-1 to nail this brief – and boy, does it.

Sporting a premium LG battery, super strong brakes, classy air-filled tires, and an excellent one-click folding mechanism, it packs a lot of admirable qualities into its 29.7 lbs package.

Such a roll call of features is impressive in itself – then you look at its price and come to realize why it’s one of my favorite budget buys.

AnyHill UM-1 Folded

Why I Recommend It:

Simplicity is the name of the game for the UM-1. This becomes clear as soon as you look at the handlebars; they’re a case study in ergonomic design. First, there are the rubber handgrips that sport a circular pattern for increased tactility. Then you have two smooth actuating paddles for the electric brake and throttle. Completing the setup is a display that gives you access to all your key stats – though it could be brighter.

AnyHill UM-1 Handlebars

The handlebars themselves are wide enough to guarantee control and stability, while the locked steering stops them from over-rotating. Elsewhere, the stem is wobble-free, the IP54 water-resistant frame is durable, and the grippy deck is large enough for your feet to get comfortable.

AnyHill UM-1 Deck

Propelled by a 36V 350W that has a top speed of 16 mph and an acceleration rate that’s 13% faster than its similarly-powered competitor – the Turboant M10 Lite – it can certainly be considered a nippy lightweight scooter.

AnyHill UM-1 Front Motor

What perhaps sets the UM-1 apart from most other models in its price class, however, is its high-quality LG battery. While most of its competitors use cheaper cells, the one on show here will deliver more charge cycles, meaning you’ll get more out of the battery for longer. Riding at a slow pace, you can expect a maximum range of 18.6 miles, or 13 miles if you’re going full pelt.

And then we have the brakes. Now, steady yourself – because the front electronic brake and rear disc will bring you to a safe stop from 15 mph in a staggering 2.2 meters. That’s better than scooters with full hydraulics that cost north of $2,500 – and leagues ahead of similarly priced rivals.

AnyHill UM-1 Disc Brake

Portability will, of course, be important to you. Well, you’re in luck, because the UM-1 features one of the best one-click folding mechanisms that I’ve ever tested. Big words, I know. Better yet, a latch on the back of the handlebars snaps into a small hook on the rear fender, meaning you can easily carry its lightweight frame.

AnyHill UM-1 Folded Frame

Another set of standout features are the 8.5-inch pneumatic tires. Their plush design engulfs vibrations, while the criss-cross tread delivers oodles of traction. I also found that the rounded front-on profile of the tires made carving from side to side feel a breeze.

AnyHill UM-1 Tire Tread

Factor in a mobile app, electronic lock, and a headlight that’s been approved by the Road Traffic Licensing Regulation for preventing glare to opposing road users, and you have a scooter that delivers well beyond its price tag.

Indeed, the AnyHill UM-1 is a lightweight, durable, and nimble everyday scooter that, thanks to its bounty of premium features, will have you wondering how you managed to snare such a bargain.

Mosquito

Holiday Sale: Save $350 | Was: $1,099 | Now: $749
Mosquito
Category: Ultra-Light (20-30 lbs)
Type: Premium

Specs:

Weight & Dimensions:

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

After having been voted the best portable scooter of 2022 by thousands of my readers, and receiving the same accolade in 2023, the Fluid Mosquito is quite simply the king of ultra-lightweight models.

Why? Well, despite weighing a waif-like 29 lbs, it can hit a scintillating top speed of 25 mph. It also comes with an excellent suspension system, puncture-proof tires, and a compact folded form thanks to its cantilevered folding mechanism, telescopic stem, and foldable handlebars.

In short, it bridges the gap between ultra-portability and high performance like no other model.

Josh With the Mosquito

Why I Recommend It:

Let’s start with the Mosquito’s main calling card: its portability. I’ve mentioned its 29 lbs weight already, and this is a huge benefit when it comes to carrying the scooter up stairs or onto public transport.

Mosquito Chassis

But there’s far more to its appeal than weight alone. Firstly, the handlebars fold down to make an already compact scooter even more so, while the stem can be retracted to reduce the length of the scooter when folded. The main folding mechanism is a cantilevered contraption that’s super convenient and easy to operate, too.

Mosquito Folded With Handlebars From Rear

Once collapsed, the Mosquito’s miniature dimensions measure just 41.5 (L) x 5.7 (W) x 13.0 (H) inches, meaning it can fit into small spaces with minimal fuss. Think car trunks, storage cupboards, and under office desks.

Mosquito Folded With Carry Handle

Then we have its power credentials. Armed with a 48V 500W motor that produces a peak power output of 700W, it can hit a sizzling top speed of 25 mph. When it comes to its power-to-weight ratio, there’s simply no competition from anywhere else on the market.

It's no slouch in getting into its stride, either. Despite being a single-motor model, it accelerates to 15 mph in just 5.0 seconds.

Mosquito Front Tire

All of this power is made easy to manage thanks to an ergonomic cockpit that features paddles for the regen brake and throttle. Measuring just 15.8 inches, the handlebars do take some getting used to, though. For context, they’re the narrowest that I’ve ever tested.

Mosquito Handlebars

Elsewhere, despite being telescopic, the stem is rock solid at any speed, while the lightweight aluminum frame is durable enough to ensure everyday stresses remain an afterthought. The grippy deck is also surprisingly long for such a small scooter.

Mosquito Grippy Rubber Deck

Then there’s the dual-spring suspension system that does a great job of neutralizing the shocks and vibrations dealt out by urban environments. This setup ensures a smooth ride despite it being fitted with solid 8-inch tires. The benefit of these is that they’re puncture-proof, and therefore low maintenance.

Mosquito Rear Spring

Its zero-hassle design can be seen in its braking setup, too. Its triple-braking system – which includes a rear drum, a front regen, and a stomp brake – will bring you to a stop from 15 mph in 4.8 meters. Best of all, though, thanks to the drum’s enclosed design, it’s impervious to the fading effects of water and dust, while the pads are long-lasting, too.

Mosquito Brake Lever

The regen brake, meanwhile, is a great addition that’ll not only reduce wear on the mechanical drum but also help extend your range. By using it you’re able to use the forces of drag to recycle kinetic energy back into the battery. It must be noted that while the Mosquito’s 48V 9.6Ah battery boasts a maximum range of 22 miles, it’s more likely that you’ll see 18 miles when factoring in real-world riding conditions (i.e. periods of fast acceleration, cruising, and multiple stops).

Mosquito Frame With Lights On

Once empty, you can recharge the battery in 5-6 hours, and trust me when I say that you’ll be in a hurry to do so – because the Fluid Mosquito is heaps of fun to ride. Practical, low maintenance, and speedy, it ticks every box for a premium lightweight electric scooter that you can rely on.

Turboant X7 Max
Category: Super-Light (30-40 lbs)
Type: Budget

Specs:

Weight & Dimensions:

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

Year after year, the Turboant X7 Max makes its way into my list of the best electric scooters, and for good reason.

Aside from its competitive performance profile, sleek sweeping design of its frame, and a plethora of extra features, it delivers far beyond the rest of the scooters in its price class.

Just look at its detachable battery, for instance. With a spare, you can double your range to 64 miles (based on best-case riding conditions), which is quite the calling card for a lightweight scooter. Typically, electric scooters that can keep the wheels rolling for over 60 miles weigh upwards of 50 lbs. With the X7 Max, however, you can take advantage of its 34 lbs frame and turn it into a mean, lean, long-range machine.

Turboant X7 Max Battery Being Detached

This scooter is a testament to what can be achieved when a leading brand listens to its customers, acts on the feedback, and refuses to settle for anything less than perfection.

Why I Recommend It:

You already know that at 34 lbs, it’s light enough to carry. What you may not know is that its upgraded folding mechanism allows you to fold and unfold the wobble-free stem with minimal effort – and once folded, it locks securely to the rear fender.

Turboant X7 Max Folded

This means you can quickly collapse it to its relatively diminutive folded dimensions (45.3 L × 16.5 W × 20.1 H inches). Once compacted, it’ll fit comfortably in a trunk or under an office desk.

But perhaps the X7 Max’s standout feature is its removable 10Ah battery. Thanks to its newly refined drivetrain hardware and software – which together ensure more efficient energy usage – it can now keep going for a maximum of 32 miles, or 18 miles if you put the pedal to the metal.

Turboant X7 Max Stem Battery

This is all great, but the clincher is that with the purchase of a spare battery – available for $220 – you can double the Max’s range. This is a unique capability that none of its rivals can match.

Turboant X7 Max Sleek Chassis

Another noteworthy design feature is the height of the handlebars. At 49.2 inches above the ground, and with 41 inches of deck-to-handlebar height, they are suitable for riders up to 6ft 4 inches, while their 16.5-inch width is perfect for maintaining control and stability at top speeds.

Josh With Turboant X7 Max

Along the handlebars, you’ll find an ergonomic all-in-one thumb throttle that can be used to not only modulate your speed but also switch riding mode and control the status of your lights (i.e. on/off). The snake skin-esque handgrips afford a texturized grip that enhances your sense of control, too. Completing the setup is a display that’s bright, tidy, and perfect for keeping tabs on your speed and battery life.

Turboant X7 Max Handlebars FPV

Adding to the X7 Max’s confidence-inspiring build is a tapered deck that’s longer, wider, and more elevated than its predecessor. Together, these refinements add up to superior comfort, as do the plush 10-inch pneumatic tires that admirably cushion the ride.

Turboant X7 Max Tire Tread

The traction-loving tires also play a pivotal role in the scooter’s maneuverability when taking advantage of its 20 mph top speed. Propelled by a 36V 350W motor, it packs more than enough punch for inner city jaunts, while its acceleration rate of 0-15 mph in 6.9 seconds is enough to bring a smile to your face.

Turboant X7 Max Motor

And when you do need to stop, the rear disc and front electronic brake will bring you to a halt in just 3.0 meters.

Turboant X7 Max Disc Brake

Lightweight, nimble, and packed with features, the Turboant X7 Max is a statement from a brand that hasn’t been short of knockout releases in recent years.

The EMOVE Touring remains as popular today as it was upon its highly-anticipated launch back in 2020 – and for good reason.

Fusing lightweight maneuverability with rugged durability and an inclusive design, this is a scooter for everybody. It doesn't matter how heavy, tall, or experienced you are: the Touring caters for all.

Throw in a high-quality LG battery, best-in-class performance metrics, and multiple folding mechanisms, and what you have is a lightweight scooter primed for everyday use.

Josh With EMOVE Touring

Why I Recommend It:

Let’s start with the most pressing point: weighing just 39 lbs, the Touring is light enough to qualify as a portable scooter that can be carried in short bursts.

Factor in its telescopic stem, foldable handlebars, and cantilevered folding mechanism, and it becomes abundantly clear that it has been designed with portability firmly in mind. It measures just 43.0 (L) x 8.0 (W) x 11.5 (H) inches when everything is folded down, making it a great fit for tight spaces like car trunks and unused corners of your apartment.

EMOVE Touring Telescopic Stem

But, the Touring isn’t just an ultra-portable scooter – it’s got bite, too. Armed with a rear-mounted 48V 500W motor, it can accelerate to 15 mph in 4.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 25 mph. For context, it holds the title as the fastest scooter in both the sub-40 lbs weight bracket and the sub-$900 price class.

Josh Standing on the EMOVE Touring

When it comes to braking, its performance isn’t quite as mic-dropping as its other features. The rear mechanical drum and regen brake will bring you to a stop from 15 mph in 4.9 meters, which is about the same as the Horizon (5.0 meters) and Mosquito (4.8 meters), but much longer than some of the other models on this list. The benefit of having a drum brake, however, is that it’s extremely long-lasting, and therefore low maintenance.

EMOVE Touring Drum Brake

And being a member of the EMOVE clan, you can also bet your bottom dollar on this little beast having tons of range, too. Its 13Ah LG battery can tear through a maximum of 32 miles on a single charge – or 19 miles when factoring in real-world riding conditions. Because of its high-quality cells, the battery retains its peak performance for much longer than other models that use cheaper cells.

Josh Riding the EMOVE Touring

Ride quality is another area where the Touring shines. Though its triple front suspension system isn’t quite as ground-breaking as it was back in 2020, it still delivers enough shock absorption on city streets to ensure a mostly comfortable ride.

EMOVE Touring Suspension

It does clatter over bumps a little, but this may have something to do with the solid tire at its rear (in place to reduce the risk of flats). The pneumatic tire at the front does its best to blunt the worst of the contact, though.

EMOVE Touring Front Wheel

Ride quality isn’t just about suspension and tires, of course. The Touring’s build also plays a big role, with the handlebars among the widest in the commuter market at 22 inches. Combined with the extra long deck, it guarantees a balanced, stable ride. Its load capacity of 308 lbs and 40.3 inch deck-to-handlebar height (which can be retracted down to 28.8 inches), makes it well suited to all types of riders – no matter if you’re short, tall, big, or small.

EMOVE Touring Deck

Light enough to slalom like a gazelle down city streets, yet as tough as a rhino in handling everyday stresses, the EMOVE Touring is an ultra-portable, ultra-fun scooter that you won’t be able to get enough of.

Apollo Air 2023

Apollo Air 2023
Category: Super-Light (30-40 lbs)
Type: Premium

Specs:

Weight & Dimensions:

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

Apollo is a brand famed for listening to customer feedback on existing models and delivering upgrades that launch already great products into the stratosphere. The Air 2023 exemplifies this process beautifully.

Sure, in many ways it’s nearly identical to the Air 2022. It features the same proprietary design, front-fork suspension, and mobile app integration we all know and love. But this time round there’s also a superior folding mechanism, self-healing tires, an improved lighting rig, and a more ergonomic cockpit.

For fans of lightweight scooters that keep things elegantly simple while bringing touches of premium quality to the fore, the Apollo Air 2023 is this year’s must-have buy.

Apollo Air 2022 Folded

Why I Recommend It:

When you see the Apollo Air 2023 for the first time, three words will come to mind: premium, portable, performance. Let’s look at each one in more detail.

First, portability. Weighing just 39 lbs, the Air 2023 lives up to its name with a profile that invites breezy handling and nimble maneuvering. Its newly IP66-rated, 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum frame is lightweight yet durable, while the handlebar width is just right for maintaining balance and control.

Josh on Apollo Air 2022

Here, you’ll also find an upgrade on the Air 2022. A complete overhaul of the scooter’s folding mechanism has eradicated all hints of stem wobble while retaining the slick and hassle-free qualities of its predecessor.

Apollo Air 2022 Simple Folding Mechanism

Once folded, it can easily be carried by its stem thanks to the new folding hook that prevents it from unlatching from the deck.

Apollo Air 2022 Folded Frame

Next, performance. Despite being a lightweight scooter, the Air 2023 packs a punch. Its 36V 500W motor can summon a fiery top speed of 21 mph and an acceleration rate of 0-15 mph in 5.7 seconds.

Apollo Air 2022 Rear Motor

Meanwhile, its 15Ah battery – complete with 21700 cells – has a maximum range of 34 miles in its hefty locker – or 23 miles under realistic conditions. Once empty, the unit takes 5-7 hours to recharge.

Together, the speed and range stats signal a well-rounded model that’s tailor-made for everyday use – while throwing in a little extra sparkle.

Apollo Air 2022 Durable Neck and Deck

This leads me to the third P: premium.

Premium is a word that can be used to describe the Air’s combination of its front-fork suspension and plush 10-inch pneumatic tires. Together, they absorb all the shocks and vibrations that you’ll encounter on city streets. What’s more, the tires are now self-healing, leaving you with one less thing to worry about.

Apollo Air 2022 Front Tire

Premium is also a word I'd use to describe the revamped cockpit. The Air now features the same 8th-generation regen and accelerative paddles that wowed us on the Apollo City Pro 2023 – but there’s more. The paddles also house the buttons for your riding modes, lights, and handlebar-integrated turn signals. The new setup is supremely ergonomic.

Apollo Air 2022 Cockpit

And then there’s the mobile app. It's the same one found on the Air 2022, which is good news for anyone who likes the idea of adjusting your regen and accelerative strength, recording rides, activating the scooter’s electronic lock, and switching between start modes.

Apollo City 2022 Mobile App

As for braking, well, like all Apollo models, this isn’t something that you’ll need to worry about. The Air 2023 sports a front drum and regenerative braking system. The latter not only reduces your use of the former to save it from wear and tear but also recycles energy to recharge the battery by up to 10%. Together, they’ll bring you to a safe and responsive stop from 15 mph in 3.4 meters.

Apollo Air 2022 Brake Lever

The challenge will be making yourself stop – because mark my words, you will not want to. The Apollo Air 2023 is a breath of fresh air for anyone interested in owning a scooter that melds lightweight portability with design prowess.

NIU KQi2 Pro

Holiday Sale: Save $180 | Was: $599 | Now: $419
NIU KQi2 Pro
Category: Light (40-50 lbs)
Type: Budget

Specs:

Weight & Dimensions:

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

I was quite taken aback by the excitement that the NIU KQi2 Pro brought to the electric scooter industry. Yet, it shouldn’t be surprising.

This award-winning lightweight champion has rewritten the rulebook on what customers can expect from a budget model. It overdelivers in the build quality and design departments, while its performance metrics are competitive and extra features impressive.

NIU has long been a force to be reckoned with. After all, it’s responsible for producing electric vehicles that have accumulated over 18 billion kilometers of distance traveled. Now, with the KQi2 Pro, it’s truly flexed its muscles to permanently transform the budget scooter market.

NIU KQi2 Pro Folded

Why I Recommend It:

So, what exactly is all the fuss about? Well, the first thing you’ll notice is the sheer level of detail that’s been paid to every component. The handlebars are 24% wider than those found on a typical budget model – which translates into outstanding balance and control – while the rubber handgrips, supremely ergonomic thumb throttle, and bright display are all expertly designed.

NIU KQi2 Pro Cockpit

Elsewhere, the deck is super grippy (though perhaps a little bit short for big feet), while the frame is completely free of wiring. It looks like a scooter that should cost a lot more than its price tag.

NIU KQi2 Pro Griptape Deck

Being a lightweight scooter, you won’t be surprised to learn that it also has its portability game honed to a tee. Its folding mechanism is so good that NIU patented it. You simply slide the safety latch up, pull on the lever to release the sturdy stem and lower it. Poetry in motion.

NIU KQi2 Pro Open Folding Mechanism

Once folded, its 41 lbs weight will not prohibit you from lifting it up a few flights of stairs or into your car trunk, where it will fit snugly. Its folded dimensions of 45.2 (L) x 20.5 (W) x 20.5 (H) inches also mean it won’t take up much space in the office or at home.

The KQi2 Pro is more than just a case study in design, however. It has bite, too. Its 48V 300W motor can produce a peak power output of 600W and build its way up to a top speed of 17 mph. It’s pretty snappy getting there as well, leaping from 0-15 mph in 6.0 seconds flat. Interestingly, it’s motor sports 33% more torque than the rest of the scooters that are in its price class.

NIU KQi2 Pro Rear Tire in Motion

Elsewhere, the 365Wh battery puts out a maximum range of 25 miles, though if you go hard on the throttle, you can expect to keep the wheels rolling for 17 miles. As a bonus, the battery comes with NIU’s (again patented) battery management system, which prolongs the unit’s efficiency with 14 different types of protection. There’s also the 2-year warranty that covers the battery – this is far beyond what any other budget brand offers with the likes of Turboant and GoTrax covering core components for just 6 months.

Josh Testing the NIU KQi2 Pro

Two other features that I love are the abnormally large 10-inch tires. Not only do they put a thick layer of shock absorption between you and the road, but thanks to their wider-than-normal profile, they promise greater handling – which is, in part, why it's so addictive to ride.

NIU KQi2 Pro Front Tire

I'm also a huge fan of the mobile app. Through it, you can control the regenerative braking strength, activate an electronic lock, create a custom ride mode, and record your rides.
Notice I mentioned regen braking? Well, the KQi2 Pro is the only scooter in the sub-$600 class to have a regenerative braking system. This means you can use it to recharge your battery, whilst also reducing wear and tear on the drum.

NIU KQi2 Pro Mobile App

And to top everything off, you get possibly the coolest headlight in the business. The halo light is destined to become iconic; the outer ring stays on the entire time, while the bulb in the middle illuminates the way forward.

NIU KQi2 Pro Lights

With all said and done, it’s rare to find a budget scooter that, from every angle, looks and performs like a premium model, yet here we are.

NIU KQi3 Pro
Category: Light (40-50 lbs)
Type: Mid-Range

Specs:

Weight & Dimensions:

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

Take every other similarly-priced scooter on the market, add their best elements into a melting pot, and sprinkle a dash of spice on top. The result is the NIU KQi3 Pro, a model that has rivals scrambling for its recipe.

Encompassing all that’s great about its little brother – the KQi2 Pro – it brings a more powerful motor, a larger battery, and sharper brakes to the party.

If the KQi2 was NIU flexing its muscles, this 45-lb howitzer is the brand unleashing an almighty roar.

NIU KQi3 Pro Folded

If you want a light scooter that offers some of the best value that money can buy, then this is the one for you. I highly recommend it.

Why I Recommend It:

NIU’s electric vehicles have generated over 18 billion kilometers of distance traveled, so this is a brand that knows what it’s doing.

And with the KQi3 Pro, it’s clearly taken a lot of pride in demonstrating its expertise. From the immaculate cable management and sweeping chassis to the beautifully ergonomic cockpit, painstaking attention has been given to every nook and cranny.

NIU KQi3 Pro Deck

This is a scooter that’s bigger and bolder than the KQi2 Pro. Measuring 21.3 inches across, the handlebars are an ideal width for maximizing control and handling, while the grippy deck is both 27% longer and 29% wider than the one found on its smaller sibling.

NIU KQi3 Pro Handlebars

These enlarged dimensions contribute to an increased weight of 45 lbs – but the KQi3 Pro is by no means a hefty model. It’s still light enough to carry in bursts, and with a patented folding mechanism, it’s satisfyingly simple to collapse. In fact, of all the models that I’ve tested, it – along with the KQi2 Pro – has the best folding mechanism.

NIU KQi3 Pro Open Folding Mechanism

Some of the added weight could also be attributed to the KQi3 Pro’s larger 48V 350W motor, which delivers an increased power output of 700W, a top speed of 20 mph, and an acceleration rate of 0-15 mph in 5.0 seconds. Yet despite being a zippier scooter, its low center of gravity and well-balanced frame means you always have a harness on it.

NIU KQi3 Pro Accelerating

Its battery is also bigger. Packing 486Wh, its maximum range is a lengthy 31 miles – or 22 miles when factoring in realistic conditions. And, as with the KQi2, you get NIU’s patented battery management system as part of the bundle.

Josh Riding the NIU KQi3 Pro On a Sidewalk

Elsewhere, huge improvements have been made in the braking department. The KQi2’s underwhelming drum brake is now a thing of the past; in its place are far superior disc brakes, which, combined with the regen system, bring you to a safe stop from 15 mph in just 2.2 meters – instead of the 5.2 meters mustered by its sibling.

NIU KQi3 Pro Rear Disc Brake

Sadly, there remains no suspension setup. Yet, you can take solace in the juicy 9.5-inch pneumatic tires, which admirably absorb most of the shocks and vibrations that you’ll come across. Being 25% thicker than your average tires, the deeper tread means they’re also great for leaning into corners for a more sporty feel.

NIU KQi3 Pro Tire

And of course, there’s the mobile app. It enables you to adjust the regen braking strength, adjust your top speed, create your own riding mode, activate the electronic lock, and record your rides.

NIU KQi3 Pro Mobile App

And when it gets dark, you can count on the halo headlight. This beauty, along with the accompanying taillight, will ensure safety is maintained.

NIU KQi3 Pro Lights

Indeed, safety is imbued in every facet of the KQi3 Pro. This is a scooter that’s simply better designed and built than any other model in its price class.

Horizon V2 (13Ah Version)

Holiday Sale: Save $230 | Was: $979 | Now: $749
Horizon V2
Category: Light (40-50 lbs)
Type: Premium

Specs:

Weight & Dimensions:

The Good:

The Bad:

Summary:

The original Horizon was a thunderbolt from the gods for anyone who wanted a lightweight, durable, and versatile scooter. Well, the skies are rumbling again, because the Horizon V2 has landed.

Fluid Free Ride has wisely retained most of the qualities that made the original Horizon so well-loved. The V2 is still snappishly quick, stoutly compact, and beautifully simple. It’s the cheapest scooter with front and rear suspension, and it’s wonderfully low maintenance.

But it also now comes with an upgraded waterproof display, a more ergonomic thumb throttle, and a carry handle that dovetails as a footrest. Small improvements, but how else can you improve a formula that was already bullet-proof?

Horizon V2 Being Carried

Why I Recommend It:

There are very few scooters under $900 that guarantee top marks in performance, practicality, and comfort, yet the Horizon V2 (13Ah variant) is one such rarity.

Key to its appeal is a combination of a spritely performance profile, sublime ride quality, and ultra-compact folded form.

Josh on the Horizon V2

Kicking things off, let’s take a look at its performance. Equipped with a rear-mounted 48V 500W motor and a 20A controller, it spits out a peak power output of 800W to deliver a satisfyingly fast top speed of 23 mph. Its acceleration rate of 0-15 mph in 4.7 seconds is pretty impressive, too.

Horizon V2 Being Ridden

As for range, it depends on which model you opt for. The cheaper 10.4Ah unit will deliver a maximum of 23 miles on a single charge, or 17 miles under realistic conditions. On the other hand, the 13Ah version – which I’m reviewing here – will increase your maximum range to 30 miles, or 23 miles if you go hard on the throttle. While other scooters may top it for range, the V2’s balance between speed, power, and portability is not to be dismissed.

Horizon V2 Sleek Chassis

Neither is its front and rear suspension system. It’s the most affordable scooter to feature such a setup. Combined with the front air-filled tire, the springs absorb the vast majority of shocks and vibrations from the road. Though adding nothing in terms of ride quality, the rear solid tire does eliminate the possibility of flats.

Horizon V2 Front Spring

What makes the Horizon stand head and shoulders above its competitors, though, is its weight distribution. While some scooters can fall victim to being top-heavy, and others bottom-heavy, the Horizon benefits from an even distribution of weight to create a perfect equilibrium. This ensures stability and comfort at all times.

Horizon V2 Chassis

The Horizon V2 isn’t without its flaws, though. The frame doesn’t have a water–resistance rating, and the lighting rig isn’t bright enough. The brakes could also be better calibrated. While the drum brake will bring you to a stop in 5.0 meters from 15 mph, it’s beaten by cheaper models like the NIU KQi3 Pro.

Horizon V2 Lights From Side

Nevertheless, the Horizon makes up for its average performance in these departments elsewhere. Most notably, riders of up to 265 lbs can put their faith in the Horizon’s robust build. The 23.2-inch handlebars are among the widest that you’ll find on a scooter of its type, too. To be precise, they’re a whopping 41% wider than the average entry-level model. Along the handlebars, you’ll find two key upgrades: the all-new IP66 water-resistant display, and a smooth-to-operate thumb throttle.

Horizon V2 Handgrip

Now, for a scooter that’s regarded as one of the leading models in the lightweight category, it must have its portability game in order. Well, I can confirm that it does. The handlebars are foldable, while the telescopic stem can be retracted to ensure maximum compactness. The cantilevered folding mechanism, meanwhile, is satisfyingly quick and simple to use.

Horizon V2 Folded Handlebars

Once collapsed, it measures just 38.6 (L) x 7.1 (W) x 14.6 (H) inches, making it easily one of the most portable models on the market.

And, if you don’t fancy folding it, the new carry handle at the rear of the grippy deck makes it far easier to lift the unfolded 42 lb frame.

Carrying the Horizon V2 By the Carrying Handle

Whether it’s portability, performance, build, or ride quality that interests you the most, the Horizon V2 is a lightweight superstar that’ll keep you entertained for years to come.

Answering Your Questions

Lightweight Electric Scooter FAQs

What Are the Best Lightweight Electric Scooters?

After testing a total of 23 lightweight electric scooters, and hand-selecting the top-performing models, I can reveal that the best scooters (ordered by weight) are:

What's the Lightest Electric Scooter?

The lightest electric scooter is the Mosquito. It has an ultra-compact frame that weighs just 29 lbs. Impressively, it also sports a high power-to-weight ratio, making it an extremely popular choice for riders who want the best of both worlds: portability and performance.

Is a Lighter Scooter Better Than a Heavier One?

This depends entirely on what you want from an electric scooter.

For instance, if you're searching for a model that can be quickly collapsed and carried for your daily commute, then a lighter scooter will be a good fit for you.

On the other hand, if you want to experience fast top speeds, ride for prolonged periods, and venture off the beaten track, then a more robust model will be better.

Generally speaking, as the weight of an electric scooter increases, so too do its performance specs.

Why Are Electric Scooters So Heavy?

The main component that adds weight to an electric scooter is the battery. Some units can weigh up to 30 lbs. Then you have the weight of the frame, motors, suspension, and so on.

Not all electric scooters are heavy, though. Based on our database of over 100 models, a lightweight scooter can be classified as weighing below 45 lbs. To put this into perspective, electric scooters can weigh anywhere from 25 to 150 lbs.

Are Electric Scooters Heavy to Carry?

While ultra-light electric scooters can be considered to weigh anywhere between 20 and 30 lbs, there's no denying that they can be heavy to carry for prolonged periods.

The most important thing to consider, though, is the angle of the folded stem, since this is what you'll hold onto. Stems that fold parallel to the deck are easier to carry since the weight of the scooter is balanced. On the other hand, stems that fold down to the deck at an angle can be more cumbersome because of the uneven weight distribution.
